History & character
Shandong is the homeland of Confucius (Qufu) and Mencius (Zoucheng), and it has been one of the cultural and agricultural cores of the Han Chinese world for over three millennia. Mount Tai is the most sacred of the five sacred mountains of Daoism, and Chinese emperors performed the Feng and Shan sacrifices on its summit for two thousand years.
The Shandong coast was carved up by foreign powers in the 19th century. Qingdao was a German concession from 1898 to 1914, leaving behind a Bavarian old town, Tsingtao Brewery (the largest beer brand in China), and one of the most consciously European-styled urban cores in Asia. Weihai was British. Yantai was American-influenced. The Japanese occupation of 1931–45 followed.
Modern Shandong is industrial and agricultural — the country's leading wheat and apple producer, a major shipbuilder and oil refiner, and home to the corporate headquarters of Haier and Hisense. Coastal cities are increasingly tourism-focused; Qingdao's August beer festival is the largest of its kind in Asia.
When to visit
May–June and September–October are optimal. Beach cities are crowded in July–August. Mount Tai is best in late spring or early autumn.
How to get there
Jinan Yaoqiang (TNA), Qingdao Jiaodong (TAO), Yantai Penglai (YNT), and Weihai (WEH) are the major airports. HSR from Beijing to Jinan 1h30m, to Qingdao 3h. Qingdao to Shanghai HSR 6h.
