Confucius and Mencius Pilgrimage — Qufu and Zoucheng, 4 days
A dedicated Confucian pilgrimage: two days at the Qufu UNESCO complex, a half-day at Mencius's birthplace Zoucheng, and an ascent of Mount Tai to visit its Confucian inscription steles.
Qufu (曲阜) in Shandong province was the birthplace of Confucius (孔子, 551–479 BCE) and remains the spiritual centre of Confucian tradition. Adjacent Zoucheng was the birthplace of Mencius (孟子, 372–289 BCE), Confucius's most influential interpreter. This four-day itinerary moves slowly through both sites, with time for the classical texts to resonate against the physical landscape.

Day 1 · qufu
Arrival Qufu, Kong Temple — south to north
Arrive at Qufu-Yanzhou HSR. Spend the afternoon in the Kong Temple (孔庙) — the ritual complex built on the site of Confucius's home and expanded over successive dynasties to 466 rooms. Walk the full south-to-north axis: Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Hall, Apricot Altar (the teaching platform where Confucius lectured). The Great Gingko tree in the temple courtyard is reputed to have been planted by Confucius himself.
Stay in: Qufu, inside the old city.
HSR Beijing South → Qufu-Yanzhou 2h, ¥200; or Jinan → Qufu-Yanzhou 45 min, ¥50.
Day 2 · qufu
Kong Mansion, Kong Forest, Nishan Sacred Site
Morning at Kong Fu (孔府) — the ancestral home of the Kong family, maintained as a working residence until 1948. The account books and ceremonial objects in the eastern wing show the family's administrative and ritual role. Afternoon at Kong Lin (孔林) — 2.4km of ancient burial grove; the graves of Confucius's direct descendants are grouped by generation in a continuous family cemetery 2,500 years old. Optional: drive 30km south to Nishan — the hill where Confucius was born, with a museum and ritual platform.
Stay in: Qufu.
Day 3 · zoucheng
Mencius birthplace at Zoucheng, return to Tai'an
Morning bus south to Zoucheng (邹城, 26km). The Meng Temple (孟庙) and Meng Mansion — smaller than the Qufu complex but comparably well-preserved, with a quieter atmosphere. The inscription 'Mother of Mencius Thrice Moved' (孟母三迁) refers to the famous story of Mencius's mother repeatedly relocating to ensure a good learning environment. Afternoon train north to Tai'an.
Stay in: Tai'an.
Bus Qufu → Zoucheng 40 min; then train Zoucheng → Tai'an 30 min.

Mount Tai — Confucian inscriptions and summits
Ascend Mount Tai via the central stone staircase. The mountain is covered in classical inscriptions carved by pilgrims and emperors over 2,000 years — notably the Han emperor Wu's sacrifice inscription and the Tang emperor Xuanzong's 726 CE tablet at the summit. The Confucian Analects records that Confucius climbed Mount Tai and 'the world became small'. Depart from Tai'an in the afternoon.
