Overview
Coastal Shandong port and wine region. The Changyu Wine Culture Museum documents the 1892 founding of China's first modern winery; nearby Penglai is the legendary 'Eight Immortals' coast.
Yantai sits on the northern Shandong coast, sheltered by the Bohai Strait between the Shandong peninsula and the Liaodong peninsula across the water. The city was opened as a treaty port in 1862 — Chefoo, as it was then known — and the concession-era buildings on Yantai Hill constitute one of the better-preserved small treaty-port districts in northern China, set on a headland above the original harbour.
The Changyu winery, founded in 1892 by overseas Chinese merchant Zhang Bishi (Bi Sheng Zhang) with European winemaking expertise, was the first European-method winery in China. The Changyu Wine Culture Museum occupies part of the original cellars and distillery complex. Yantai is now China's largest wine-producing region by output, with vineyards across the surrounding Jiaodong peninsula.
70 km west along the coast, Penglai is the mythological location of the Eight Immortals' sea crossing — a persistent motif in Chinese popular religion. Penglai Pavilion (1061 CE), one of the Four Great Towers of China, sits on a coastal cliff above the Bohai Strait with views toward the legendary island of Penglai.
Cherries from the surrounding Yantai hills are harvested in late May and June; domestic tourism peaks during this period. The city maintains regular ferry services across the Bohai to Dalian, cutting the overland journey considerably.
