Shandong Classic — Qufu and Mount Tai, 5 days
The most essential Shandong circuit: Confucius's hometown Qufu, the sacred summit of Mount Tai, and a half-day in Qingdao. Suitable as an add-on from Beijing or Shanghai.

This five-day itinerary covers what most visitors come to Shandong for: the UNESCO World Heritage site at Qufu (birthplace of Confucius), the sunrise over Mount Tai (the most sacred of China's five sacred mountains), and a brief stop at Qingdao's historic waterfront. The route runs efficiently on HSR and can be appended to either a Beijing or Shanghai trip.
Shandong (山东, 'east of the mountains') is a peninsula province with strong literary and philosophical associations — Confucius was born in Qufu in 551 BCE; the Analects and most of Confucian philosophy traces to this small city. The Kong family (孔, direct descendants of Confucius) lived in the Kong Mansion continuously for nearly 2,500 years — the longest residential occupation by a single family lineage in documented Chinese history. The family was finally displaced in 1949.
Mount Tai (泰山, Tài Shān) is the most politically and spiritually significant of China's Five Sacred Mountains — emperors climbed it to perform the Feng and Shan sacrifices to Heaven and Earth, legitimising their mandate. Seventy-two emperors are recorded to have climbed Mount Tai over 3,000 years; the stone staircase route with its inscribed tablets and gateways is one of the most historically layered paths in China. The summit sunrise view (when cloud inversions fill the valleys below the peak) is the reason for the overnight stay.
Qingdao is best known internationally for Tsingtao beer (青岛啤酒, founded 1903 by German settlers) and for the 2008 Beijing Olympics sailing events. The old German concession district — a compact grid of steep streets with European-style villas, churches, and brewery buildings — makes for a pleasantly disorienting half-day.
