About
A broad crescent of fine golden sand on the Bohai Sea, considered among the finest beaches in northern China.
Jinshatan — Golden Sand Beach — stretches for approximately 3.8 kilometres along the Bohai Sea coast near Yantai, Shandong Province. The beach takes its name from the unusually pale, fine-grained sand, which gives the shoreline a warm amber colour in afternoon light. Water temperatures are warmest between July and September, when swimming is popular, though the beach is visited year-round for its scenery and coastal walking.
The beach is set within the Jinshatan Tourist Resort, a coastal development zone that has grown considerably over the past decade. Behind the foreshore, a strip of hotels, seafood restaurants, and recreational facilities caters to both domestic tourists and Shandong locals on summer weekends. Yantai is well known across northern China for its apple orchards and wine production — the Changyu Wine Cultural Museum is a short drive away and pairs well with the beach.
Water sports available on and around Jinshatan include jet skiing, banana boat rides, and windsurfing tuition. The beach's relatively shallow gradient makes it suitable for families. At low tide, rock pools at the northern end of the beach reveal small crabs, sea anemones, and other intertidal life.
Yantai's broader coastline includes several smaller coves to the east, reached by coastal cycle path from Jinshatan. The city's European-influenced old quarter, dating from German and then Western commercial era treaty-port influence, is worth half a day of exploration alongside the beach.
How to get there
Bus or taxi from Yantai city centre, approximately 20–30 minutes. No direct metro line as of 2026.
