Overview
Cleanest air in eastern China by AQI — a small coastal Shandong city with substantial Korean tourism, the Liu Gong Island naval-history park, and the country's most-photographed coastal cycling route.
Weihai sits on the eastern tip of the Shandong peninsula, 235 km across the Yellow Sea from Incheon, South Korea — the closest major mainland Chinese city to Korea. The proximity has made it a substantial destination for South Korean visitors: Korean restaurants, signage and guest infrastructure are more visible here than in most Chinese cities outside Yanbian.
The city is consistently ranked among the cleanest-air cities in eastern China by annual mean PM2.5 figures. The surrounding coastline is undeveloped by Chinese coastal standards: rocky shores, clear water and modest beaches rather than the high-rise holiday infrastructure that characterises Qingdao or Sanya.
Liu Gong Island, 4 km offshore, was the fortified base of the late-Qing Beiyang Fleet, destroyed by Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–95. The Liu Gong Island Sino-Japanese War Museum is the major heritage site, with preserved gun emplacements, the Commander's Hall and warship relics. A ferry from the city waterfront runs the short crossing.
The Banyue Bay (Half-Moon Bay) coastal cycling route runs 105 km with sea views, and Chengshan Cape, the easternmost point of the Shandong peninsula, is 70 km east and offers views of the Bohai–Yellow Sea convergence. Weihai's small scale and coastal orientation make it a natural one-to-two-day extension from Qingdao or Yantai.
