Overview
Confucius's hometown in southwestern Shandong. The Confucius Temple, Confucius Family Mansion, and Confucius Forest — collectively UNESCO-listed.
Qufu is a small city in southwestern Shandong that holds an outsized position in Chinese civilisation. It was the capital of the ancient state of Lu, and it was here that Kongzi — known in the West as Confucius — was born in 551 BCE, taught throughout his adult life, and was buried in 479 BCE. The three sites associated with him and his descendants are collectively UNESCO-listed and constitute the most significant concentration of Confucian heritage anywhere in the world.
The Confucius Temple (Kong Miao) occupies a walled compound in the centre of the city, expanded over centuries from a modest memorial into a complex of nine courtyards covering 22 hectares. The Great Achievement Hall (Dacheng Dian), the temple's main ceremonial hall, is one of the three great ancient wooden halls in China alongside the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City and the Daimiao Temple at Mt Tai. The temple is an active ceremonial site: elaborate rites are performed here on Confucius's birthday (28 September) and on other calendar occasions, attracting thousands of participants.
The Kong Family Mansion (Kong Fu) is the former residential compound of the Kong family — the lineal descendants of Confucius, who were granted aristocratic title and their ancestral compound by successive dynasties. The mansion was continuously occupied and expanded for 77 generations, from the Han dynasty through the Republic of China. The surviving complex covers over 16 hectares with 463 rooms, including audience halls, residential quarters, gardens, and an archive room containing the family's genealogical records. The 78th-generation descendant moved to Taiwan after 1949; the mainland branch of the family still exists and maintains the cultural role.
The Confucius Forest (Kong Lin) is the family cemetery, 1.5 kilometres north of the mansion, where Confucius himself is buried in a simple earthen mound beside the Sishui River. The surrounding 200-hectare forest contains over 100,000 graves of Kong family members spanning 2,500 years — the longest continuously maintained family burial ground in the world. The forest is genuinely ancient: gnarled trees, narrow paths, and stone grave markers in multiple dynastic styles, with the atmosphere of a working ancestor memorial rather than a tourist attraction.
Qufu is small enough to be covered on foot in a single long day, though two days allows a more contemplative pace. The town around the temple complex has preserved some of its historic streetscape.
