Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
History & character
Guangxi is China's only autonomous region designated for the Zhuang people, the largest ethnic minority group in the country (over 18 million, mostly in Guangxi). The Zhuang have maintained their language, festival traditions, and bronze-drum rituals across more than a thousand years of incorporation into Chinese empires.
The region's signature landscape is the karst — vertical limestone peaks rising abruptly from rice paddies and rivers — which dominates the Li River corridor between Guilin and Yangshuo. This landscape has been the most painted scenery in Chinese art, present on the back of the 20-yuan banknote, and a permanent fixture of the global imagination of "China." Yangshuo's West Street has become the country's most established backpacker town, with rock climbing, river kayaking, and bike rides among the karst.
The Vietnamese border in the southwest gives Guangxi a distinctive frontier character. Nanning, the capital, is increasingly an ASEAN trading hub. The Detian waterfall on the border with Vietnam is the largest transnational waterfall in Asia.
When to visit
April–early June and September–November are optimal for the Li River. Late June can be foggy. May 15–early June is the rice-terrace flooding window when the Longji terraces are mirror-flat.
How to get there
Guilin Liangjiang (KWL), Nanning Wuxu (NNG), and Beihai (BHY) are the main airports. HSR from Guangzhou to Guilin 3h, from Nanning to Guangzhou 4h.
