Overview
Small town on the Li River 65 km south of Guilin. The most popular base for cycling, climbing and river-rafting in the karst landscape. West Street is the backpacker spine.
Yangshuo sits at the downstream terminus of the Li River cruise from Guilin, 65 km south, where the river emerges into a flat plain after cutting through the most dramatic stretch of karst country in southern China. The town became the backpacker centre of southwestern China in the 1980s, when foreign travellers discovered the combination of affordable guesthouses, limestone scenery and slow pace, and it has retained that character despite significant tourist commercialisation.
The core appeal is the landscape. The Yulong River, a quieter karst tributary southwest of town, is the venue for bamboo rafting through paddy fields and beneath pinnacles. Rock climbing on the limestone towers is a specialist draw — more than 1,000 established routes make Yangshuo one of Asia's denser climbing areas. The Moon Hill arch, a natural opening in a limestone hill 8 km south, is a half-day walk or cycle.
West Street (Xi Jie), the cobbled tourist spine, has cafes, guesthouses, tour operators and bars operating in English at prices higher than elsewhere in the region. Beyond the street, the rice paddies, water buffalo and village lanes begin within five minutes by bicycle. E-bikes and regular bicycles can be hired easily and are the best way to explore the surrounding countryside.
The landscape backdrops appear on the Chinese 20-yuan note — the hills from the Li River downstream of Xingping, 27 km north of Yangshuo, are the source of that image. The Liu Sanjie Impression Show, a large-scale nocturnal performance staged by Zhang Yimou using the river and karst cliffs as a backdrop, runs most evenings and draws considerable crowds.
