Overview
Small town on the Li River 65 km south of Guilin. The most popular base for cycling, climbing and river-rafting in the karst landscape. West Street is the backpacker spine.
Yangshuo is the village (now a small town) at the downstream end of the Li River cruise from Guilin. It became the backpacker centre of southwestern China in the 1980s and remains the easiest place to base for the karst landscape: the Yulong River bamboo rafting, cycling routes through karst country, rock climbing on the limestone cliffs (Yangshuo has more than 1,000 routes), and the Moon Hill day-walk. West Street (Xi Jie) is the cobbled main strip with cafes, bars and tour shops; the surrounding rice paddies, water-buffalo fields and karst pinnacles are 5 minutes by bike from the town centre.
