Overview
Capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the largest Zhuang ethnic area in China. Tropical, green, and the gateway to the Vietnam border crossings and the Detian waterfall.
Nanning is the tropical capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a city that is greener, more relaxed, and more ethnically diverse than most provincial capitals of comparable size. The Zhuang people are China's largest ethnic minority group, and Guangxi is their administrative homeland; Zhuang language and cultural forms appear alongside Mandarin across the city, though most daily life operates in Mandarin and the Cantonese-inflected dialect of the region.
The city has a Vietnamese cultural undertow that is unique in mainland China. The border at Friendship Pass (Youyi Guan) near Pingxiang is around 170 kilometres south — close enough that Vietnamese goods, foods, and cross-border traders are a normal part of Nanning's market life. Vietnam has had a presence in Guangxi's cultural landscape for centuries; the recent reform era's opening of border trade has intensified it.
In the city itself, Qingxiu Hill is the main green space: a forested ridge south of the city centre with temples, walking paths, lake views, and a pagoda. The Guangxi Museum of Nationalities holds one of the better collections of Zhuang, Miao, Dong, and other minority-culture artefacts and textiles in China — a useful introduction to the region's ethnic diversity before venturing into the countryside. Yangmei Old Town, 30 kilometres west on the Yong River, is a riverside merchant settlement with some preserved Qing-era buildings.
The food is the most immediate daily pleasure. Nanning's signature is laoyou fen (老友粉) — old-friend noodles, a pungent, slightly sour, chilli-laden soup with rice noodles, pickled bamboo shoots, and your choice of protein. It is more aggressively flavoured than the tourist-friendly dishes of tier-1 cities and divides opinions quickly. Roast suckling pig appears on banquet tables and at street-food counters; the snail rice noodles (luosifen) associated with Liuzhou, two hours north, are also available throughout the city.
For most visitors, Nanning is the gateway into Guangxi's remarkable hinterland. Detian Falls, on the Vietnam border, is the world's second-largest transnational waterfall and reachable by bus in around three hours. The Zuojiang Huashan rock art site (UNESCO World Heritage) is two hours by bus, depicting thousands of painted human figures and animals on a riverside cliff face. The Mingshi Pastoral Landscape further west involves rice terraces and Zhuang village architecture.
