About
Sacred Daoist mountain west of Chengdu, said to be the cradle of Daoism. UNESCO-listed jointly with Dujiangyan.
Mt Qingcheng is one of the most important Daoist mountains in China. Tradition holds that Zhang Daoling, the founder of religious Daoism, achieved enlightenment here in the 2nd century CE. The mountain is split into front (Qiangcheng Qianshan, with the major temples — Jianfu Palace, Tianshi Cave) and back (Qingcheng Houshan, quieter, more wild). UNESCO-listed jointly with Dujiangyan. Half-day to a day on the front mountain; full day or overnight for the back.
