About
Quieter alternative to the Chengdu panda base, 60 km west. Smaller scale; volunteer programmes for international visitors.
The Dujiangyan Panda Base — officially the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Centre Dujiangyan Base — opened in 2013 as a satellite facility to the flagship Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in the city centre. It sits 60 kilometres west of Chengdu at the edge of the Minshan Mountains, and was partly designed to serve as a rehabilitation facility where pandas bred in captivity could be gradually habituated to more natural conditions before attempted release. The site houses roughly 30 giant pandas, a significantly smaller population than the central Chengdu base, which translates directly into fewer crowds and more time at each enclosure.
The enclosures are spaciously designed and set within a forested hillside, which gives the base a less zoo-like character than its urban counterpart. Pandas are most active in the morning — by midday they tend to settle into their characteristic stillness — so early arrival is rewarded. The base offers a paid volunteer programme [VERIFY: source needed — May 2026] giving participants several hours of supervised contact with panda care: preparing bamboo, cleaning enclosures, and observing keeper routines. The programme requires advance booking and fills quickly with international visitors who have sought it out specifically; it is not available as a walk-up option.
Dujiangyan makes practical sense as a day-trip or overnight base rather than a simple panda excursion. The Dujiangyan irrigation system — a functioning 2,300-year-old hydraulic engineering work and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is 15 minutes away, and Mt Qingcheng, one of Taoism's four sacred mountains, is a further short drive. The combination of panda base, irrigation works, and Taoist mountain constitutes a coherent two-day Sichuan classical itinerary without returning to Chengdu between stops.
