Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
成都大熊猫繁育研究基地 · Chéngdū Dàxióngmāo Fányù Yánjiū Jīdì
About
100+ giant pandas across multiple enclosures, 30 minutes north of central Chengdu. Visit before 10am for the active feeding period.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was founded in 1987 with six giant pandas rescued from the wild following the mass flowering and die-off of arrow bamboo in the Qinling Mountains — a food crisis that reduced the wild panda population to crisis levels. The base has since grown into the largest captive giant panda facility in the world, housing around 100 giant pandas across multiple enclosures, plus a population of red pandas in a separate zone. A significant proportion of the giant pandas currently held in captivity worldwide — both in China and in loan programmes at foreign zoos — originate from this facility's breeding programme or are directly descended from its animals.
The base occupies a landscaped park 30 minutes north of central Chengdu. The enclosures are large by zoo standards, with climbing structures, bamboo plantings, and both indoor and outdoor areas. Giant pandas are most active in the early morning, specifically during and after the bamboo feeding session that runs roughly from 8:30 to 10am. After feeding, they settle into the extended rest periods that constitute the majority of a giant panda's waking life — a metabolic consequence of subsisting on food with very low caloric density. Arriving at opening time (7:30am) and heading directly to the main enclosures gives the best chance of seeing animals engaged with their environment rather than sleeping. The Sunshine Nursery, where cubs are housed when young, draws the largest crowds and is busiest from mid-morning onwards.
The base is large enough to require two to four hours for a reasonable circuit. An electric shuttle runs the main route for those unwilling to walk the full distance. Weekday mornings outside national holidays are the quietest times; weekend crowds at the Nursery can be significant. The Dujiangyan Panda Base, 60 kilometres west, is the alternative for those who prioritise space over convenience.
