China for seniors in 10 days
Beijing to Suzhou to Hangzhou to Shanghai, built around lift-accessible accommodation, manageable walking distances, gentler pacing, and accessible attractions. Designed for travellers in their 60s, 70s, and beyond who want to see China without the physical demands of the standard tourist circuit.
The standard China itinerary is designed for travellers who can comfortably spend eight hours on their feet, navigate steep temple stairs, stand for twenty minutes in moving queues, and process large crowds without fatigue. Many travellers in their 60s, 70s, and beyond can do all of this — but a thoughtful itinerary anticipates which challenges matter and plans around them, rather than leaving it to chance.
This ten-day itinerary covers four cities with serious cultural depth, using half-days rather than full days, building in rest time, staying in hotels with confirmed lift access and manageable layouts, and avoiding the attractions that require significant physical exertion (Huangshan, steep temple stairways, the Great Wall's steeper sections).
The Great Wall at Mutianyu — included on day three — is accessible via cable car and toboggan or standard chairlift, requiring minimal walking on the wall itself. The major Suzhou gardens have mostly level paths. West Lake in Hangzhou is entirely flat. The list of attractions is chosen for genuine cultural significance alongside physical accessibility.
Day by day
Day 1 · beijing
Arrive Beijing — rest day
Arrive and check into a hotel in the Wangfujing area or near the Palace Museum — central, flat neighbourhood, close to major attractions and good restaurants. Rest and acclimatise. Evening: Wangfujing walking street and a Cantonese or Peking duck restaurant. Do not programme a full day on arrival.
Day 2 · beijing
Beijing — Palace Museum (Forbidden City)
The Palace Museum is fundamentally flat — the ceremonial halls sit on raised platforms accessible via broad ramps and gentle stairs. The main visitor route through the central axis takes 2–3 hours at a comfortable pace. Wheelchair hire is available at the main entrance [VERIFY: current availability — May 2026]. The Palace Museum's electric-vehicle golf-cart shuttle runs on the central axis for visitors who cannot walk the full distance. Afternoon rest at the hotel. Evening: Peking duck at a mid-range restaurant near the hotel.

Day 3 · beijing
Beijing — Mutianyu Great Wall (cable car)
Day excursion to Mutianyu Great Wall, approximately 90 minutes from central Beijing by private car or organised tour. Mutianyu's cable car ascent and toboggan descent make the wall accessible without climbing the approach steps; once on the wall, the restored section is walkable at a steady pace with resting points at tower overlooks. A 1–2 km walk on the wall is satisfying without being strenuous. Return to Beijing by 4pm for a rest before dinner.

Day 4 · beijing
Beijing — Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace
Morning: Temple of Heaven complex — the park and the ceremonial buildings are accessed via broad paved paths. The Circular Mound Altar and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests are both on raised platforms with broad steps; the grounds themselves are flat. Afternoon: Summer Palace. The lakeside path around Kunming Lake is entirely flat and provides the best overview of the ensemble. The Longevity Hill requires a climb if you want the view from the pavilion — optional.
Attractions: temple-of-heaven, summer-palace
Day 5 · suzhou
High-speed rail to Suzhou — garden afternoon
High-speed rail Beijing to Suzhou (approximately 4 hours). Check into a hotel in the garden district. The Lingering Garden (留园) in the afternoon — predominantly level paths through the corridors and courtyards, with a few steps between sections. The covered walkway system in Suzhou's gardens provides shade and shelter. The garden is at its quietest in mid-afternoon.
