About
Comprehensive museum of Hong Kong's history from prehistoric to the 1997 handover. Free entry.
The Hong Kong Museum of History occupies a building in Tsim Sha Tsui completed in 2001 and holds the most comprehensive public account of Hong Kong's history available to visitors. The permanent exhibition — the Hong Kong Story — runs from the territory's geological formation and Neolithic inhabitants through the Yue and Han-dynasty periods, the development of fishing and farming communities in the Pearl River delta, the founding of the British trading port in 1841, the colonial era through to Japanese occupation (1941–1945), post-war reconstruction, and the 1997 handover to China. The exhibition underwent a major renovation beginning around 2020 and sections have been reopening progressively [VERIFY: source needed — May 2026]; it is worth checking the current state of the galleries before visiting.
The colonial-era galleries are the most detailed and the most visually engaging: reconstructed street scenes from different periods of Hong Kong's commercial history, period shop interiors, colonial administrative artefacts, and extensive photographic documentation of the city's transformation from small trading port to one of Asia's major financial centres. The 20th-century material — covering the Japanese occupation, the postwar influx of refugees from mainland China, the development of Kowloon and the New Territories, and the cultural and political changes of the decades leading to handover — is particularly thorough.
Entry is free, which makes the museum an exceptionally good-value half-day even by Hong Kong standards. The building also houses the Hong Kong Science Museum next door on the same complex. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui East, it is walkable from the main Tsim Sha Tsui MTR exit. Allow two to four hours depending on your interest in colonial and modern Hong Kong history.
