About
Older theme park on the south side of Hong Kong Island. Marine animals, mountain-and-coast roller coasters, a panda enclosure.
Hong Kong Ocean Park opened in 1977, built on a dramatic coastal site on the south side of Hong Kong Island where the land falls sharply from a headland ridge to the South China Sea. The park occupies two distinct zones separated by roughly 200 metres of vertical elevation: the lower Waterfront area at sea level, with marine exhibits and a children's area, and the upper Summit area on the headland, with the major rides and spectacular coastal views. The two zones are connected by a cable car — a gondola system that lifts visitors over the ridge with views across the sea — or by an internal funicular.
The marine exhibition is the park's original identity and remains a distinguishing characteristic from its newer Disney neighbour. The Grand Aquarium holds one of the largest tanks in Asia, with a 5,000-fish population visible through a panoramic acrylic panel. The Ocean Theatre has performed shows with sea lions, while the Polar Adventure zone covers Arctic and Antarctic species. Giant pandas — one of the park's most-visited features — are housed in a dedicated pavilion; Ocean Park has historically maintained a panda pair on loan from mainland China.
The ride section at the Summit includes multiple roller coasters designed around the steep coastal terrain: The Flash descends from the upper level with sea views on the drop, and the Hair Raiser is a steel coaster on the cliff edge. The park has undergone considerable reinvention since a financial crisis around 2020 disrupted operations, and the current ride and exhibition lineup should be verified on the park website before visiting. Ocean Park is notably quieter than Hong Kong Disneyland on most days, making it a better practical experience for those who value queue management over brand recognition.
