About
Open-air market on Hong Kong Island's southern coast. Souvenirs, art, casual restaurants on the waterfront promenade.
Stanley Market occupies a warren of covered lanes and open-air stalls in Stanley village on Hong Kong Island's southern coast, reached from Central by a bus ride over the island's mountainous interior or around the eastern coastline. The market has existed in various forms since the colonial period and is Hong Kong Island's most-visited outdoor shopping destination outside the central commercial districts. The product range is heavily oriented toward souvenirs and gifts: silk robes and pyjamas, Chinese painted porcelain, clothing, watches, handicrafts, and the category broadly described as 'antiques' where buyer scepticism is appropriate. Prices are negotiable and lower than in the mall retailers of Central or Tsim Sha Tsui.
The market's physical setting gives it more character than the merchandise warrants. Stanley Bay curves around a small headland with sailing dinghies in the water and a promenade lined with restaurants facing the sea. The restaurants range from moderately priced Cantonese to international — the outdoor seating overlooking the bay is the main draw at lunchtime. At the south end of the promenade, Murray House stands incongruously: a three-storey granite colonial building originally constructed in Central in 1844 as military quarters and carefully dismantled stone-by-stone and reassembled at Stanley in 2001, now housing restaurants on its ground and upper floors. The reconstruction is architecturally straightforward but the building's history is the kind of detail that improves the view.
Stanley is most usefully combined with a stop at Repulse Bay — roughly midway between Stanley and Central on the same bus route — where the beach and the Tin Hau temple complex on the beachfront add two more stops to a half-day southern-Hong Kong Island circuit.
