About
Cable car from Tung Chung to the Big Buddha plateau. 5.7 km, 25-minute ride; crystal-floor option.
Ngong Ping 360 is a gondola cable car system connecting Tung Chung on the northern Lantau coast to the Ngong Ping plateau, a journey of 5.7 kilometres taking approximately 25 minutes. The lower terminus is beside the Tung Chung MTR station and ferry pier; the upper terminus is at Ngong Ping village, adjacent to the Tian Tan Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. The route crosses the airport island, passes over the South China Sea, and traverses the forested interior ridges of Lantau with views back toward the airport, Hong Kong Disneyland, and the Pearl River delta on clear days.
The cabins come in two types: standard enclosed gondolas seating six to eight passengers, and crystal cabins with glass floor panels that allow a view directly downward. The crystal cabin upsell is one of the more reliable pieces of tourist pricing in Hong Kong — the view through the floor is genuinely different from the windows, and the section crossing the sea provides the vertigo effect it promises. Standard cabins provide adequate views from the side windows without the additional fee.
At the upper terminus, Ngong Ping Village is a commercial development built around a cultural theme, with souvenir shops, restaurants, and small exhibitions on Chinese culture. Its appeal is modest. The reason to take the cable car is the plateau beyond it: the Big Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery warrant two to three hours of visit. The cable car runs roughly from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and with extended hours on weekends; it has been periodically closed for maintenance — check the operator website before building a day around it. Bus 23 from Tung Chung provides the ground-level alternative when the cable car is not operating.
