Overview
A remote county town in southern Garzê Prefecture, Sichuan, serving as the gateway to Yading Nature Reserve — a high-altitude alpine sanctuary with three snow peaks sacred to Tibetan Buddhism.
Daocheng county is a high-altitude administrative centre at approximately 3,750 metres in southern Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. Its significance for tourism is almost entirely as the gateway to Yading Nature Reserve, 90 km to the south, which holds three of the most celebrated alpine landscapes in China: the snow peaks of Chenrezig (6,032 m), Jambeyang (5,958 m) and Chanadorje (5,958 m) — names that correspond to three major Bodhisattvas in Tibetan Buddhism. The reserve was described by the American botanist Joseph Rock in the 1920s as 'Shangri-La', a claim subsequently deployed by several competing Yunnan and Sichuan destinations.
Daocheng itself is a small town of Tibetan and Han residents, with the infrastructure of a county capital: a main street, government offices, simple hotels, and a handful of restaurants. Daocheng Yading Airport, opened in 2013, is among the highest airports in the world at 4,411 metres and has made the area significantly more accessible, with direct flights from Chengdu, Chongqing and other cities.
The town of Riwa, within the Yading reserve itself, is the operational base for visiting the alpine lakes and peaks. Most visitors spend one or two nights in Riwa or in Daocheng and make the journey to the inner reserve by foot, horse or a combination of shuttle buses and cable cars available in the scenic area. October, when larches turn golden and the first snowfall dusts the peaks, is considered the most visually spectacular time.
Cultural & access notes
The three peaks are sacred to Tibetan Buddhism as physical manifestations of Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), Jambeyang (Manjushri) and Chanadorje (Vajrapani). The landscape is not merely scenic but actively worshipped. Circuit walks around the base of the peaks follow the traditional kora pattern — clockwise. Behave respectfully and avoid treating the area as purely recreational.
What to see

- Milk Lake (Niunai Hai) — turquoise high-altitude lake near Chanadorje peak
- Five Colour Lake (Wucai Hai) — the highest and most dramatic of the reserve's lakes
- Daocheng-Yading scenic drive — the approach road passes red sandstone formations and highland rivers
- October golden larches — the autumnal colour change that makes this the busiest season
What to eat
- Yak butter tea — available at every guesthouse in the area
- Yak meat dishes — braised or dried, widely available
- Sichuan noodle dishes at Han-run restaurants in Daocheng town
- Tibetan barley porridge (tsampa congee) at guesthouses in Riwa
Getting there
Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY) at 4,411 m receives flights from Chengdu (about 1 hour), Chongqing and some seasonal routes [VERIFY: current schedules — May 2026]. By road from Chengdu, the journey via Kangding and Litang is approximately 2 days (500+ km of mountain roads). From Kangding by road approximately 8–10 hours. The airport is the practical gateway for most international visitors.
Getting around
Shuttle buses in the scenic area connect Riwa to Chonggu Meadow and the inner valley. Cable cars cover the upper approach. Horses are available for hire for the inner trail to the lakes. The full inner-reserve circuit on foot is a strenuous 2-day hike.
Where to stay
Riwa (inside the reserve buffer zone) has guesthouses and small hotels that fill quickly in October. Daocheng town has additional capacity. Booking well ahead for any visit in September–October is essential.
We list neighbourhoods, not specific hotels — we don't endorse hotels.
When to go
June–October is the accessible season. October (larches golden, snow on peaks, clear skies) is the most desirable month but also the most crowded. June–July offers green meadows and wildflowers. Before June and after November, roads into Yading may be blocked by snow.

Safety notes
The airport and town are at extreme altitude (4,411 m and 3,750 m respectively). Altitude sickness is a real risk, particularly for those flying directly from sea level. Acclimatise for at least one day before attempting the inner reserve trails. The inner reserve reaches above 5,000 m at the upper lakes — do not attempt these in poor health. Weather can change rapidly; carry warm and waterproof layers at all times.
