Overview
A Tibetan Gyarong county in western Sichuan's Garzê Prefecture, famous for its ancient stone watchtowers, tiered village settlements on valley walls, and apple orchards in bloom.
Danba County lies at the confluence of the Dadu River and Xiaojin River in Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, at the transition zone between the Sichuan Basin and the Tibetan plateau. The county is home to the Gyarong Tibetan people — a sub-group of the Tibetan cultural world with a distinct dialect, architectural tradition and cultural identity. The defining visual element of the Danba landscape is the ancient stone watchtower (qiangzhai): tall, multi-storey structures of dry-stone masonry that rise from the valley walls, built by the Gyarong as defensive structures during the inter-clan conflicts that characterised the region's history from the Tang dynasty through the Qing. Over 560 towers remain across the county [VERIFY: current count — May 2026].
The towers are typically integrated into hillside village settlements, which themselves are tiered arrangements of stone and timber houses climbing the valley slopes above the valley floor cultivation areas. The combination of ancient towers, terraced village architecture, Tibetan monasteries, river gorges and high surrounding peaks creates a visual environment quite unlike anywhere else in China.
The Suopo and Zhonglu areas to the east of Danba county town have the densest concentration of towers and are the primary visitor destinations. Apple orchards throughout the valley bloom pink and white in April, and autumn foliage turns the hillsides red and gold in October.
Danba is accessible by road from Kangding (approximately 2.5 hours east on the S211 highway) and from Chengdu via Maerkang or Luding. No rail or air connection exists.
Cultural & access notes
The Gyarong Tibetan people are distinct from both Han Chinese and the Khampa Tibetan culture of Litang and Kangding. Their stone towers are historical defensive structures, not simply decorative. Do not attempt to climb or enter towers without permission from the owning family. Village religious sites are active.

Getting there
By road from Kangding (KGT) approximately 2.5 hours on the S211 highway [VERIFY: current road conditions — May 2026]. From Chengdu via Maerkang and Jinchuan approximately 8–10 hours. No scheduled air or rail service reaches Danba. Roads through the gorge can be blocked by landslides after heavy rain — check conditions before travelling.
Getting around
The county town is small and walkable. Hired vehicles or motorbike taxis serve the Suopo, Zhonglu and Jiaju village areas, each 5–15 km from the county town. No public bus service covers these routes regularly.
Where to stay
Danba county town has simple guesthouses and mid-range hotels. Village guesthouses are available in Jiaju and Suopo for those wanting an immersive tower-village stay. Facilities are basic.
We list neighbourhoods, not specific hotels — we don't endorse hotels.
When to go
April–May (apple blossom) and October–November (autumn foliage) are the peak visual periods. June–September is manageable but hot in the lower valley and subject to monsoon rain. Winter roads are often icy above the county town.
