The Tin Hau Temple in Yau Ma Tei was founded in 1865 and is one of the oldest surviving temples in Kowloon. It is dedicated to Tin Hau — Mazu in Mandarin — the sea goddess worshipped across coastal southern China and wherever Cantonese fishing communities settled. In Hong Kong, where fishing was the foundational livelihood before the British colonial period, Tin Hau temples were among the first religious structures established in each new settlement. The Yau Ma Tei temple was built when the area was still a fishing village on the Kowloon peninsula before the reclamation that now separates it from the harbour.

The temple complex consists of five adjacent halls sharing a common frontage: the central Tin Hau hall flanked by halls dedicated to Shing Wong (the city god), Fuk Tak (earth god), Buddhist Kwan Yam, and a Shea Tan (community shrine). The arrangement — multiple deities in adjacent halls rather than a single dedicated temple — reflects the syncretic religious practice common in Cantonese folk religion, where Taoist, Buddhist, and local deity worship operate in comfortable coexistence. The temple is small and set back from a courtyard where incense burners continuously receive offerings from local worshippers. It is an active religious space rather than a heritage exhibit.

The Tin Hau Temple is most usefully visited as part of the surrounding neighbourhood rather than as a standalone destination. Temple Street Night Market begins to set up from around 6pm immediately to the east, running south toward Jordan MTR. The Jade Market — a covered market selling jade jewellery, ornaments, and the inevitable jade-adjacent products — operates during the day in a structure a short walk north. The combination of temple, jade market, and night market makes Yau Ma Tei one of the more coherent evening itinerary stops in Kowloon.
