About
The largest Disney castle of any park, plus the only Pirates of the Caribbean ride built around projection-mapping. Metro-accessible from central Shanghai.
Shanghai Disneyland opened in June 2016 after years of negotiations between Disney and the Chinese government — the result being a park 51% owned by a state-backed consortium and 49% by Disney, with content specifically shaped for Chinese audiences. The park occupies a 3.9-square-kilometre site in Pudong's Chuansha district, directly accessible on Metro Line 11.
The Enchanted Storybook Castle, at the park's centre, is the largest Disney castle built for any park globally. The layout organises six themed lands around the castle: Mickey Avenue (the main entrance street), Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Adventure Isle, Treasure Cove, and Tomorrowland. The Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure attraction in Treasure Cove is the engineering showpiece — a dark ride built around projection mapping, animatronics, and a massive set rather than the traditional log-flume format. TRON Lightcycle Power Run in Tomorrowland is the primary thrill ride, a motorcycle-seat coaster that sweeps through a darkened building at speed. Soaring Over the Horizon in Fantasyland is a popular aerial simulation shared with Epcot.
The park is well-managed but expensive. Standard weekday tickets start around ¥599 for adults; peak and super-peak dates (school holidays, Golden Week, Chinese New Year) can push well above ¥800 [VERIFY: source needed — May 2026]. Queue times at headline attractions routinely exceed 60 to 90 minutes without the Lightning Lane paid fast-pass system. Arriving at gate-open and going directly to Pirates or TRON first is the conventional strategy. November through mid-March is the quietest season. A full day allows one pass through the main rides; a second day is needed to reduce queuing significantly.
