Overview
Capital of Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in northwest Xinjiang, positioned in the green Ili River Valley near the Kazakhstan border. Distinctive Russian and Kazakh architectural influence, the Kazakh grasslands of Nalati and Sayram Lake are within a day's reach.
Yining (also known by its Uyghur name Ghulja and sometimes referred to as Ili) is the capital of Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, set in the Ili River Valley on Xinjiang's northwest border with Kazakhstan. The valley sits at a lower elevation than the surrounding Tian Shan ranges and receives significantly more rainfall than the Tarim Basin to the south, giving it a greener, more temperate character than most of Xinjiang. The Russians occupied the region for eleven years in the 1870s during the Dungan Revolt chaos, leaving an architectural legacy visible in some older buildings in the city centre.
The Ili River Valley has been populated by Kazakh, Uyghur, Hui, Russian and Han communities, and Yining's mix of mosques, Russian Orthodox-influenced buildings, Kazakh markets and Han commercial areas reflects this layered history. The area around Jiefang Road in the old part of the city has preserved a character distinct from more recently built parts of Xinjiang's cities.
The surrounding landscape is the main draw for visitors: the Nalati Grasslands, about 120 km east of Yining, are Kazakh summer pasture country with dramatic mountain scenery and yurt camps operating in summer. Sayram Lake (2,073 m), approximately 100 km east on the G30 highway, is a large high-altitude lake fed by snowmelt and unusually vivid blue. The Guozigou Valley on the road east from Yining is a narrow gorge with a notable bridge and well-photographed scenery. The Kazakhstan border crossing at Khorgas (Huoerguosi) is approximately 90 km west and is one of the main overland trade crossings between China and Central Asia.
Yining's summer is the most practical visiting season — the grasslands are at their greenest and the mountain roads are all open. Spring (April–May) brings apple and apricot blossom across the valley orchards.
Cultural & access notes
Ili Kazakh Prefecture has a substantial Kazakh-speaking population alongside Uyghur and Han communities. The grassland culture involves specific hospitality customs — accept tea and food offered in yurts; declining repeatedly can seem rude. The spring festival Nauruz (Nawruz) is celebrated by both Kazakh and Uyghur communities in late March.
