Overview
Desert oasis 150 km southeast of Urumqi at -154m below sea level — the lowest point in China. Jiaohe ancient ruins, Bezeklik Buddhist caves, the Karez well system, Flaming Mountains, and the country's grape capital.
Turpan sits in the Turpan Depression at −154 metres below sea level — the second-lowest point on Earth after the Dead Sea. The combination of desert air, minimal rainfall and the Tianshan snowmelt delivered through the 2,000-year-old Karez underground irrigation channel network creates an agricultural microclimate that produces China's best grapes and melons at the bottom of a natural heat trap.
Jiaohe ('River-Confluence City'), 10 km west of Turpan, is one of the world's best-preserved earthen ruins: a Han through Tang-era city carved from a natural loess mesa between two rivers rather than built up from ground level, with visible foundations of residences, temples, government compounds and the wide central avenue preserved across 50 hectares on a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative list.
Gaochang ruins, 30 km east, were the capital of successive oasis-kingdom polities from the 1st century BCE through the Uyghur Khaganate (9th–13th centuries). The Bezeklik Caves nearby contain Tang-era Buddhist murals, though a significant portion was removed by German, British and Russian archaeological expeditions in the early 20th century and now resides in Berlin, London and St Petersburg.
The Flaming Mountains — red sandstone hills whose iron oxide gives them an orange-red glow in the afternoon sun — are 10 km north of the city and feature prominently in the 16th-century novel Journey to the West as a obstacle requiring Sun Wukong to extinguish with a magic fan. Summer temperatures here can exceed 70°C on the rock surface. The Emin Minaret (1778 CE) in central Turpan is the largest Islamic tower in China.
