Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

About
5,596m peak directly behind Lijiang. Glacier Park cable car reaches 4,506m; the Impression Lijiang outdoor show plays on the lower slopes.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — Yùlóng Xuěshān — is a 35-kilometre north-south massif immediately behind Lijiang, its highest peak (Shanzidou) standing at 5,596 metres. The mountain is sacred to the Naxi people, regarded as the home of the patron deity Sanduo; it is visible from Lijiang Old Town and from most of the surrounding plain on clear days. The upper peaks retain snow cover year-round; in October through April the glaciers on the upper slopes are at their fullest extent.
Shanzidou has never been successfully summited by any mountaineering expedition, partly due to its cultural status as a sacred mountain, which has contributed to authorities prohibiting climbing attempts above a certain elevation. For general visitors, access is via three cable cars at different elevations. The Glacier Park cable car — the highest — lifts from the base to 4,506 metres, a significant altitude gain above Lijiang's already 2,400-metre elevation. The upper cable car terminal connects to a wooden boardwalk that climbs to approximately 4,680 metres, bringing visitors to close range of the lower glacier margins. Altitude sickness is a genuine issue at this elevation for visitors coming directly from sea level; oxygen canisters are sold at the terminal and the time limit on the upper platform is enforced. The Yak Meadow (3,100m) and Spruce Meadow (3,240m) are two lower cable car destinations with forest and alpine meadow landscapes, accessible without significant altitude effects.
The Impression Lijiang outdoor performance, directed by Zhang Yimou, plays daily on a stage built at 3,100 metres with the snow peaks as the backdrop and 500 Naxi, Yi, and Tibetan performers. The show is a large-scale spectacle — worth seeing if outdoor performance at altitude appeals. Shuttle buses and tour packages from Lijiang organise the main cable car and show combination into a full day.
