About
Smaller, quieter Naxi old town 4 km north of Lijiang Old Town. The same stone-paved street pattern with far fewer crowds.
Shuhe Old Town sits 4 kilometres north of Lijiang's Dayan Old Town and predates its more famous neighbour as a Naxi settlement. It was the original nucleus of Naxi village life in the Lijiang basin before commercial expansion concentrated activity in Dayan during the Song and Yuan dynasties. Shuhe's historic streets were part of the ancient Tea Horse Road trading route linking Yunnan's tea-producing regions with Tibet, and the town's role as a waystation on this route shaped its architecture — the courtyard inns and ground-floor shops of the main streets were designed to accommodate traders and their horses.
The physical structure of Shuhe closely resembles Lijiang Old Town: cobbled lanes, stone-channelled water canals running alongside the streets, Naxi-style two-storey courtyard houses with grey tile roofs, and a central square. The Nine-Dragons Pool at the town's western edge is the water source — a cluster of springs that feeds the canal system; the pool itself is a pleasant quiet stop. Shuhe is designated as part of the Lijiang UNESCO inscription, which covers the entire historic settlement area.
The practical difference from Lijiang Old Town is scale and crowd level. Shuhe covers a smaller area, walkable in 90 minutes at a comfortable pace. It receives fewer visitors and is quieter, particularly in the mornings and on weekdays. The shops and restaurants cater partly to tourists and partly to local Naxi residents — the mix is more balanced than in Dayan, where tourism fully dominates. A growing number of visitors to Lijiang choose to stay in Shuhe guesthouses and day-trip into Dayan Old Town for the busier atmosphere. The bus connection to Lijiang takes about 15 minutes.
