About
The largest freshwater lake in Yunnan at 300 km², historically the scenic centrepiece of the Kunming basin and now being restored after decades of water-quality degradation.
Dianchi Lake spreads across the southern Kunming basin, ringed by the city on its northern and eastern shores and by agricultural land and wetland restoration zones to the south and west. At approximately 300 km², it is by far the largest lake in Yunnan and was historically the primary reason for Kunming's prosperity — its waters supported fisheries, irrigated surrounding fields, and provided transport links across the basin.
Decades of urban expansion and industrial effluent resulted in severe algal bloom problems from the 1980s through the 2010s, with the lake turning green with blue-green algae in warm months. Large-scale remediation programmes initiated since 2015 — involving wetland construction, factory relocations, and agricultural runoff controls — have made measurable improvements to water quality, and the lake now hosts returning populations of black-headed gulls that winter here between November and March.
The western shore of Dianchi is the most scenically rewarding. The West Mountain (Xishan) rises directly from the lake's edge, with a cable car ascent to cliff-carved Daoist shrines overlooking the water. Dragon Gate (Longmen), a sequence of grottos and viewing pavilions carved into the cliff face above the lake, is the standout attraction on the mountain.
The Haigeng Park on the northeastern shore provides the closest lakeside access from central Kunming, with cycling paths, fish restaurants, and winter gull-watching platforms. The annual black-headed gull season (November to March) draws birdwatchers and photographers from across China.
How to get there
Metro Line 1 south to the lake's eastern shore (Haigeng). Bus routes to Xishan from city centre. Taxi from central Kunming approximately 30–40 minutes.
When to visit
