About
Glacial lake at 1,910m beneath Mt Bogeda, 100 km east of Urumqi. The most-visited natural attraction in Xinjiang.
Heavenly Lake — Tianchi — is an alpine lake at 1,910 metres elevation on the northern slopes of Mt Bogeda in the Tianshan range, approximately 100 kilometres east of Urumqi. The lake occupies a glacially carved basin below Bogeda Peak (5,445m), which is considered a sacred mountain by Kazakh and Uyghur communities. The 4.9-square-kilometre lake is fed by glacial meltwater from the Bogeda glaciers above and drains through the Sangong River toward the Turpan basin. Bodie, spruce, and fir forests clad the slopes above the shoreline, giving the lake a different visual character from the desert terrain that dominates most of Xinjiang.
The lake is a significant elevation gain above the Urumqi basin — the transition from the desert city (elevation ~850m) to the alpine environment is one of the visit's more striking aspects. The Tianshan range runs east-west for approximately 2,500 kilometres through Central Asia, and Tianchi sits in the eastern Xinjiang section where the mountains are most accessible from the regional capital. The area was historically pasture for Kazakh semi-nomadic herders; yurt accommodation operated by local Kazakh families is available at the lakeside [VERIFY: source needed — May 2026], alongside horse-trekking routes into the surrounding hills.
The standard visitor experience is a day trip from Urumqi — tour buses depart from the city, a mandatory scenic-area shuttle carries visitors from the entrance gate to the lakeside, and boat tours circle the lake. For a more substantial visit, the hiking routes above the lakeline offer views of the Bogeda glacier faces and the surrounding Tianshan terrain. Staying overnight in yurt accommodation allows early-morning lake access before day-trip crowds arrive. The May-to-September period is the reliable season; the frozen lake in winter has its own character but access conditions vary.
