Heavenly Lake sits at 1,910m on the slopes of Mt Bogeda (5,445m) in the Tianshan range east of Urumqi. The 4.9 km² alpine lake is a glacial-meltwater body surrounded by spruce and fir forest. Standard day-trip from Urumqi; horse-trekking and yurt-stays available with the Kazakh-minority residents. Mt Bogeda is one of Xinjiang's sacred peaks.
How to get there
Tour bus from Urumqi (~1.5 hours).
When to visit
May–September. Frozen lake in winter is photogenic.
