Puzhehei

Karst landscape with lakes and lotus fields in southeastern Yunnan. Less famous than Guilin but with rare 'flat karst' geology.

Puzhehei is a Zhuang-minority name meaning 'lake among the fish and flowers', and the landscape delivers on both counts. Located in Qiubei County of southeastern Yunnan's Wenshan Prefecture, the 312-square-kilometre scenic area is a karst landscape of a type geologically distinct from the famous vertical pillars of Guilin. Here the karst pinnacles rise from flat lake beds and rice paddies rather than from riverbanks — creating a 'flat karst' formation where the juxtaposition of sharp limestone outcrops with mirror-calm water and agricultural land produces an unusually composed natural landscape.

The main scenic zone consists of several interconnected lakes, channels, and wetland areas ringed by and perforated with limestone outcrops. Boat trips navigate between the islands and pinnacles — flat-bottomed wooden boats take groups of visitors through the system of channels, past floating lotus and water lily beds. In summer (July and August) the lotus is in full bloom across large sections of the lake surface; this is the peak visitor season. In winter, the water is clearest and the lotus pads have died back, giving cleaner views of the limestone reflections.

The surrounding area has Zhuang and Yi minority villages with traditional architecture and annual festivals. The local authorities have promoted Puzhehei as an alternative to Guilin for visitors who find the Li River too commercially saturated; visitor numbers have grown substantially since the high-speed rail connection from Kunming made the site reachable in about 3.5 hours. A full day covers the main lake circuit and surrounding village walks; overnight stays in guesthouses in Puzhehei village allow a sunrise visit to the most photogenic lake sections.
