贵州省 · Guìzhōu Shěng — capital Guiyang, guizhou (sour fish, fermented chilli, glutinous rice cakes, miao and dong minority specialities).
History & character
Guizhou is among the poorest provinces in China by per-capita GDP, but among the most ethnically diverse — over 30% of the population is non-Han, with substantial Miao, Dong, Bouyei, Tujia, and Yi communities. The mountainous terrain (over 90% of the province) and dispersed villages have preserved minority cultures more intact than in flatter, more easily Sinicised regions. Lusheng pipe music, indigo-dyed textiles, drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges, festival lunar-calendar circuits — all remain living traditions.
The province has reinvented itself in the 2010s and 2020s through two channels: tourism and big-data infrastructure. Apple, Tencent, Huawei, and several other tech giants have built data centres in Guizhou, drawn by cool temperatures, low electricity costs, and seismic stability. Tourism has grown around the Miao villages of Xijiang Qianhu and Langde, the Dong villages around Zhaoxing, the Huangguoshu Waterfall (largest in Asia by volume), and the Mahuagong scenic area.
Guiyang, the capital, is a low-key mid-sized provincial capital; the more characterful destinations are in the mountains.
When to visit
