About
7.5 km crescent-shaped beach on Hainan's southern coast, lined with international-brand resort hotels. The premium beach destination in mainland China.
Yalong Bay is a 7.5-kilometre arc of beach on the southern coast of Hainan Island, 25 kilometres east of Sanya city. The bay is sheltered by headlands at both ends, which keeps the surf gentle and the water relatively clear compared with more exposed Chinese coastal sites. The sand is white and fine; the water temperature allows comfortable swimming from October through May and warm-but-tolerable conditions year-round. The surrounding hills of tropical forest provide a visual backdrop that distinguishes the bay from the flat resort developments at Dadonghai and Sanya Bay.
The resort infrastructure at Yalong Bay is the most concentrated of high-end international hotel brands in mainland China: the Ritz-Carlton, Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Mandarin Oriental, and St Regis all have properties here, mostly constructed in the 2000s. The resort zone sits back from a public beach promenade that runs along the shoreline — the beach itself is publicly accessible without hotel affiliation, though facilities (sun loungers, showers, food) are managed by the hotels. The public beach is typically less crowded than the hotel beach sections in weekday low season.
Water sports at Yalong Bay include kayaking, paddleboarding, and parasailing, with operators on the public beach. The Wuzhizhou Island ferry pier is within reach of the bay by taxi. Sanya's Duty Free shopping mall is a 20-minute drive back toward the city. The bay is at its best from November through April, when skies are clear and humidity is lower; summer is hot and humid with occasional typhoon risk. The tourism marketing description 'Hawaii of the East' is a perennial comparison that somewhat oversells both the surf and the tropical isolation, but as Chinese domestic beach resorts go, Yalong Bay is among the most developed.
