Sanya is the closest mainland Chinese resort destination to year-round tropical weather. Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay and Dadonghai give a sequence of beach resorts running east from the city. The market is heavily domestic — peak winter season (December–February) sees Beijing flights at premium prices — with a long-established Russian community at Dadonghai. Sanya is now also a leading duty-free shopping destination for Chinese citizens.
