Hainan in March
Hainan's beach season has a sweet spot in March — after the domestic peak, before the heat, with the Sanya beaches at their cleanest.
Hainan's tropical season runs roughly November through April. Within that window, March is the underrated month — past the Spring Festival and Chinese New Year peak (when domestic tourism overruns Sanya), before the May 1st Labour Day holiday, before the summer heat begins. Here is what March in Hainan looks like.
Climate
Daytime 25-30°C, nighttime 18-22°C. Low humidity by tropical standards. Water temperature 24-26°C — comfortable swimming. Rainfall low (4-7 days of light rain typical for the month). Skies: mostly clear; a few overcast days in the second half of the month.
This is the sweet spot before the May humidity sets in.
Where to base
Yalong Bay (亚龙湾) — the upmarket strip; international resort hotels (Ritz-Carlton, Hilton, Mandarin Oriental). 7.5 km of fine white sand. Calm on the inner bay. Most foreign visitors base here.
Haitang Bay (海棠湾) — newer development, slightly less crowded than Yalong Bay. Strong concentration of duty-free shopping (CDF Mall is the largest single duty-free centre in China).
Dadonghai — middle-tier, cheaper hotels, mainly Chinese and Russian visitors. Walking-distance to Sanya Bay.
Sanya Bay — the city beach, urban-feel, accessible to the city restaurants.
For a first-time visitor, Yalong Bay is the standard recommendation.
Activities
Beach days are the core. Yalong Bay's beach is well-managed; lifeguard chairs every 200m, water depth marked.
Wuzhizhou Island day trip. 20-minute ferry from Sanya's eastern coast. Snorkelling, diving (PADI dive shop on site). ¥144 entry plus ferry. Allow a full day.
Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park — 1,506-hectare rainforest park behind the beach. Cable car, suspension bridges, the bamboo-forest filming location of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. ¥175.
Tianya Haijiao ('End of the Earth') park — west of Sanya. Less impressive than the name suggests, but locally significant. ¥85, half-day.
Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Zone — 108m sea-Guanyin statue. ¥135. Half-day; the Guanyin statue is genuinely large.
Snorkelling and diving — Wuzhizhou Island is the standard spot. Visibility 8-15m typical. Tropical fish, some coral.
Food
Hainan is its own culinary region: - **Hainan rice with chicken** (海南鸡饭) — the local origin of the Singapore staple. - **Coconut chicken hot pot** (椰子鸡) — the Hainan-origin dish that has spread nationally. - **Wenchang chicken** — the local breed; salt-baked or sliced cold. - **Tropical fruit** — coconut, mango (April-July peak), pomelo, dragon fruit, year-round. - **Seafood** — abundant at the night markets in Sanya and at the seafood streets near Sanya Bay.
Cost
Mid-range March visit: - Hotel (Yalong Bay 4-star): ¥800-¥1,500/night. - Hotel (Haitang Bay or Dadonghai 4-star): ¥500-¥1,000/night. - Flight Beijing/Shanghai → Sanya: ¥800-¥2,000 round trip in March. - Activities: ¥200-¥500 per person per day. - Food: ¥200-¥400 per person per day.
A 5-day mid-range Hainan trip in March: ¥6,000-¥12,000 per person.
What's not great about March
- Wuzhizhou Island weekends can still be busy — domestic visitors pour in.
- The Russian-tourist zone in Dadonghai sometimes irritates other visitors; head to Yalong Bay for quieter.
- Sanya's city traffic is not great — get hotels with shuttles to the beach if you're not in Yalong/Haitang.
What's better than the alternative beach months
- November-December: cooler water, occasional cool snaps.
- January-February: Spring Festival peak; prices double, beaches packed.
- April-May: humidity rising; rainy days more frequent.
- June-September: rainy season + typhoons; many days unswimmable.
- October: typhoons still possible.
March in Hainan: comfortable temperatures, clean water, lower-than-peak prices, accessible flights. Worth considering as a beach destination for travellers based in mainland China.
