Hainan beach week
Sanya beaches and tropical island lifestyle — 7 days.
China Visit Guide
Yalong Bay beach
Hainan Island is the southernmost province of China, a tropical destination with year-round warm water and extensive resort development along the southern coast. Sanya sits at the tip of the island and is the main tourism hub — three distinct bays (Yalong, Haitang, Sanya) each with its own character. Yalong Bay has the international resort strip; Haitang Bay has the duty-free megacomplex and newer hotels; Sanya Bay is the local beach, cheaper and less manicured. The best travel window is November to April; the summer monsoon season (June–September) brings heavy rain, occasional typhoons, and humidity. Wuzhizhou Island, a 15-minute ferry from Xiling Harbour, is the best snorkelling within easy reach of Sanya — coral coverage is moderate but fish life is dense. Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Zone — on the southwestern coast — is a genuine working temple complex as well as a cable-car-and-statue attraction. Tianya Haijiao (End of the Earth) is a romantically named coastal park with dramatically inscribed rocks; the sunsets are genuine.
Day by day
Day 1 · sanya
Arrival, Yalong Bay
Fly in to Sanya Phoenix Airport and transfer to the beachside resort. Most of the international-brand hotels are along the Yalong Bay strip — the 7 km crescent of beach is the clearest and most consistent for swimming. Check in, walk the beach at dusk, choose a seafood restaurant. The night market behind the resort belt has reasonable fresh fish at half the resort price.

Day 2 · sanya
Yalong Bay beach day
Full beach day. The water is calm and clear enough for snorkelling from the shore at the northern end of Yalong Bay where the reef is closest. Equipment hire is available through the hotel or from beach vendors. Resort water sports include banana boats, parasailing, and jet skis — all organised from the beach hut operators. Morning is the best swimming window before the afternoon onshore breeze picks up.
Day 3 · sanya
Wuzhizhou Island
Ferry from Xiling Harbour (approximately 15 minutes; tickets ¥110–¥150 [VERIFY: current prices — May 2026]) to Wuzhizhou Island, a small protected marine reserve. The island has beaches on three sides, snorkelling areas with equipment hire, and a dive shop offering PADI introductory dives for non-certified guests. Coral coverage varies — the western reef is better than the eastern. Return by 4pm.
Day 4 · sanya
Haitang Bay shopping (duty-free) and beach
Haitang Bay is 25 km northeast of Yalong Bay — a taxi or hotel shuttle. The China (Hainan) Pilot Free Trade Zone's duty-free shopping is centred on the Haitang Bay mall complex, which offers luxury goods at significant discounts for departing international travellers. The beach at Haitang Bay is wider and less crowded than Yalong. The Intercontinental and Hilton properties here are among the most architecturally interesting resorts on the island.
Day 5 · sanya
Nanshan Buddhism cultural zone
The Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone on the southwestern coast includes the 108m Guanyin sea statue — the largest Guanyin image in the world, standing on an artificial island platform 300m offshore. The complex also contains an active monastery, Buddhist sculpture gardens, and cable car access to the cliff-face Guanyin grotto. Allow 3–4 hours. The zone is more coherent as a Buddhist pilgrimage site than as a pure tourism attraction; treating it as the former makes the visit more rewarding.
Day 6 · sanya
Tianya Haijiao and Sanya Bay
Tianya Haijiao (天涯海角 — End of the Earth) is a coastal park named from inscribed granite rocks that have been a literary and romantic symbol since the Tang dynasty. The site is modest — a beach walk and some dramatic rocks with calligraphic inscriptions — but the sunset is reliable and the location on Sanya Bay's western end provides a good view of the bay arc. Sanya Bay itself has a long promenade and a coconut-tree avenue — more working-local than resort, and a contrast to Yalong's international character.
Day 7 · sanya
Departure
Final morning at the resort beach. Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX) is approximately 20 minutes from Yalong Bay by taxi; allow 2 hours before departure for check-in and the duty-free purchases if you haven't already. Hainan's duty-free allowance for departing visitors is generous — consult current limits before shopping [VERIFY: current duty-free allowance for your nationality — May 2026].
