About
14 km Ming-dynasty wall enclosing the historic core of Xi'an. Walk or cycle the entire loop on top of the wall — 90 minutes by bike.
The Xi'an City Wall is the most complete surviving city wall in China, and among the most extensive in the world. The current 14-kilometre rectangular perimeter was rebuilt in its present form between 1370 and 1378 by the first Ming emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, whose general Xu Da used the earlier Tang and Song wall lines as the foundation. The wall replaced a structure that had enclosed the Tang dynasty capital Chang'an — then one of the largest cities on earth — though the Ming perimeter is considerably smaller than the Tang one, enclosing the inner administrative district rather than the full Tang city.
The wall stands 12 metres high and between 12 and 18 metres wide on top — broad enough for vehicles to have driven along during the Republican era. The structure is solid rammed earth clad in brick, with battlements on the outer parapet and a lower inner parapet. At the four cardinal points, major gate systems include a gatehouse tower and an external barbican enclosure — a gate-within-a-gate defensive arrangement allowing defenders to trap attackers who had broken through the outer gate. The South Gate (Yongningmen) has the most elaborate barbican and is the most-visited entry point.
The wall-top circuit is the primary visitor experience: 14 kilometres walkable in about three hours at a steady pace, or cyclable in 90 minutes on the bicycles rented at the main gates. Late afternoon and sunset are the most atmospheric times — the light from the west illuminates the brick surface and the battlements cast long shadows along the walkway. The wall also serves as a vantage point over both the modern city outside the perimeter and the historic district within, giving a sense of Xi'an's layered urban geography.
How to get there
