About
Cluster of restored Hui-style villages in northeastern Jiangxi. Famous for the late-March rapeseed-flower bloom.
Wuyuan county, in the northeast corner of Jiangxi province on the borders with Anhui and Zhejiang, contains approximately 30 well-preserved villages in the Hui architectural style — the same whitewalled, grey-tile, horse-head-gabled merchant village form found in nearby Xidi and Hongcun across the provincial border. Wuyuan was historically part of Huizhou prefecture (now split between Anhui and Jiangxi), and its villages were built with the same merchant wealth from the same long-distance trading networks. The county's villages have been grouped under a tourism management structure offering a through-ticket valid for five days covering 14 villages.
The principal villages span different terrain and character. Likeng, in a forested valley, is one of the best-preserved and least-crowded. Xiaoqi has unusually elaborate wood carvings in its residential interiors. Wangkou, at a river confluence, retains a more intact riverside village character. Sixi-Yancun is a combined site of two adjacent villages with substantial Ming-period structures. Each village requires a separate entry from the through-ticket and most are not accessible without private transport, making either a hire car or a guided tour the practical approach for covering several in a day.
The county's most-visited period is late March, when the surrounding hillside fields are planted with rapeseed (canola) and bloom in vivid yellow — the combination of yellow fields, white village walls, grey tile, and dark woodland makes images that have become one of the most reproduced rural China photographs. The bloom period is approximately two to three weeks and varies by year and altitude; the peak timing requires checking in advance. Autumn — particularly October and November — brings a second photographic season when the maples around the villages colour red. The village street life and architectural details are worth the visit in any season without the crowds of late March.
