Province · Northeast China
吉林省 · Jílín Shěng — capital Changchun, dongbei + korean (yanbian korean autonomous prefecture has a distinct korean-chinese cuisine).
History & character
Jilin sits in the heart of the historical Manchurian forest and steppe. Its capital Changchun was Manchukuo's puppet capital from 1932 to 1945, and the surviving Japanese-built government buildings, the puppet emperor's residence, and the wide processional avenues are now museums.
The province is best known for two things: Changbai Mountain (Baekdu/Paektu in Korean), a sacred volcanic peak straddling the North Korean border with a crater lake at the summit, and the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in the east, where roughly 800,000 ethnic Koreans speak Korean alongside Mandarin and the food, signage, and architecture take on a distinctly Korean character. Changchun itself has been the seat of the FAW automotive group since the 1950s and is the cradle of China's car industry.
Winter sports development has accelerated in the past decade — Beidahu and Lake Songhua resorts now host international ski events, and the Jilin City Rime Festival (mid-winter) draws photographers for ice-coated trees along the Songhua River.
When to visit
Late September–October for autumn foliage on Changbai Mountain. December–February for skiing and the Rime Festival. Avoid Changbai in winter unless equipped — the crater lake area is closed.
How to get there
Changchun Longjia (CGQ) and Yanji Chaoyangchuan (YNJ — for Yanbian and Changbai) are the main airports. HSR from Beijing to Changchun 6h, from Shenyang 1h30m.
