Liaoning

史History & character

Liaoning is the southernmost of the three Northeast provinces — the historical Manchu homeland and the first part of China to industrialise heavily. The Qing dynasty's founding capital, Mukden (modern Shenyang), still has its imperial palace from before the Manchus took Beijing in 1644. The province was at the centre of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05, occupied by Japan from 1931 to 1945 as part of the Manchukuo puppet state, and then bombed back into reconstruction during the Chinese Civil War.

The Soviet-influenced industrial planning of the 1950s shaped Shenyang and Anshan into China's "rust belt" — heavy steel, automotive, and machine-tool manufacturing. The 1990s and 2000s were brutal as those state-owned giants downsized. Recent decades have seen a partial pivot to coastal services, with Dalian emerging as a software, port, and Japanese-language outsourcing hub.

For visitors, the contrast is the draw: Mukden Palace and the Imperial Tombs alongside Soviet-era industrial neighbourhoods alongside Dalian's near-Mediterranean coast. Winters are spectacular if you can handle minus-20°C — ice festivals, hot stews, working steam locomotives at the Diaobingshan railway museum.
