Yamdrok Tso (Yamdrok Lake)

Sacred turquoise lake at 4,440m, 100 km south of Lhasa. Visited via the Khamba La pass (4,800m) on the road to Gyantse.

Yamdrok Tso is one of the four sacred lakes of Tibet — alongside Namtso, Manasarovar, and Lhamo La-tso — and in Tibetan religious geography is considered a life-force lake whose condition is connected to the fate of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The lake sits at 4,440 metres elevation in the hills south of Lhasa, covering approximately 638 square kilometres in an irregular, branch-armed form that extends for roughly 72 kilometres. Its colour — an intense turquoise that deepens to blue in certain light conditions — derives from the depth and mineral composition of glacially fed water.

Most visitors encounter Yamdrok from the Khamba La pass, the 4,794-metre road crossing on the Lhasa-to-Gyantse highway. The pass viewpoint sits roughly 300 metres above the lake surface and offers a panoramic sight of the main body of water extending toward the Tibetan horizon, with the Nyenchen Tanglha range visible in the distance. The view's quality depends entirely on weather: on clear days the colour saturation against snow peaks is the visual payoff; on overcast days the lake is simply grey-blue and the surrounding hills featureless. The road over Khamba La is open to vehicles with permits; independent travellers require a licensed guide and official Tibet permit.

The lake also has a pumped-storage hydroelectric facility on its western shore — a politically contentious construction, as Tibetan religious communities considered it desecration of a sacred body. The facility is not visible from the main viewpoint. Yamdrok is a standard inclusion in the Lhasa-Gyantse-Shigatse itinerary, typically visited on the transit day between Lhasa and Gyantse rather than as a standalone destination. Allow half a day for the pass stop, including travel time from Lhasa.
