About
A sacred turquoise lake visible from the Lhasa-Gyantse highway at 4,441 m, considered one of the four holy lakes of Tibet and one of the most visually striking landscapes on the Tibetan plateau.
Yamdrok Lake lies approximately 90 km south-west of Lhasa, visible from the Karo La pass (4,998 m) on the main road connecting Lhasa to Gyantse and Shigatse. The lake sits at 4,441 m elevation and extends over approximately 638 km², with an irregular shoreline of bays and peninsulas that gives it a distinctive map outline. In clear weather, the lake's colour — a vivid turquoise ranging to deep blue depending on light and season — contrasts with the tawny brown hills surrounding it in a way that consistently stops travellers in their tracks.
In Tibetan Buddhism, Yamdrok is considered one of the four most sacred lakes in Tibet, associated with protective deities of the plateau. Oracles were historically consulted at the lake, and the site continues to attract Tibetan pilgrims who perform the kora (circumambulation) of the lake — a journey of several days on foot or horseback. Stupa platforms at the viewpoints above the lake are maintained with prayer flags replaced by local communities.
The Karo La pass viewpoint, where the main highway crests a ridge overlooking the lake, is the most visited vantage point and offers a panoramic view that includes Nojin Kangtsang glacier (7,191 m) to the south-west. Stopping at this viewpoint is standard on any Lhasa-Gyantse itinerary. Longer exploration of the lake's shoreline villages — home to Tibetan fishing communities and small monasteries — requires a vehicle and additional time.
All visitors to the Tibet Autonomous Region require a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to a standard Chinese visa. Group travel with a licensed Tibet guide is mandatory.

By road from Lhasa, approximately 1.5–2 hours to the main Karo La viewpoint, continuing to Gyantse. Standard stop on Lhasa-Shigatse road tours.
