About
Restored late-Qing merchant residence in central Hangzhou. The largest preserved private mansion of its era.
Hu Xueyan was a late-Qing merchant-turned-banker who at one point was reputed to be the wealthiest commoner in China. His Hangzhou residence, built 1872, covers 5,800 m² across multiple courtyards and elaborate landscaped gardens. Restored in the 2000s; opened to visitors. Less famous than the Suzhou classical gardens but informative on late-Qing wealth and architecture.
