History & character
Hubei sits on the middle Yangtze. Its name means "north of the lake" — Dongting Lake, which is actually now in Hunan to the south, but the boundaries were drawn when the lake was substantially larger. Wuhan, the capital, is the largest inland-river port on the Yangtze and one of China's most important industrial and university cities. The 1911 Wuchang Uprising that ended Qing imperial rule began here.
The Three Gorges — Qutang, Wu, and Xiling — historically marked the western edge of Hubei before Chongqing was carved out as a separate municipality in 1997. The Three Gorges Dam, completed in 2006, is the largest hydroelectric installation in the world and a major (and controversial) reshaper of the upper Yangtze landscape. The Three Gorges cruise from Yichang to Chongqing remains one of the great river journeys of Asia.
Hubei has long been a transit and industrial province — steel at Wuhan, automotive at Shiyan, optoelectronics at Optics Valley. The 2020 outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan brought the city unwanted global attention; recovery has been comprehensive.
When to visit
April–early May and October–early November are optimal. Three Gorges cruises run March–November but are best in late spring and early autumn. Avoid late June plum rain.
How to get there
Wuhan Tianhe (WUH) is the major hub. HSR from Beijing 4h30m, from Shanghai 5h, from Guangzhou 4h. Yichang Sanxia (YIH) is the gateway for cruises.
