Shanghai vs Chengdu — east coast vs southwest hub
For a second trip to China after the standard Beijing / Great Wall / Terracotta Army circuit, Shanghai and Chengdu are the two most-recommended next-stop cities. They represent completely different sides of contemporary China: Shanghai is the country's global-facing commercial engine and Chengdu is its cultural-southwest hub with a slower pace and one of its most distinctive food cultures.

Verdict by trip type
- For a first-time visit
- Shanghai for a first-time visitor with limited days — bigger, more legible, direct international flights. Chengdu for a repeat visitor wanting a different pace and a foothold to southwest China (Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan alpine routes).
- For culture and history
- Chengdu. Sichuan Opera face-changing, teahouse culture in Renmin Park, Wenshu Monastery, Kuanzhai Alley old town, Panda Base. Shanghai's cultural draws are late-Qing / Republican rather than deep-classical.
- For food
- Both excellent, very different. Chengdu for Sichuan cuisine (mala hot pot, dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, chuan chuan) at its source; the street food density is unmatched. Shanghai for regional variety across the country plus native Jiangnan cuisine (xiaolongbao, shengjianbao, hairy crab).
- For nightlife
- Shanghai. Xintiandi, Bund, French Concession — proper nightlife infrastructure. Chengdu has bars (Jiuyanqiao, Taikoo Li) but the scene is smaller.
- For families with children
- Both work. Shanghai has Disneyland + aquarium; Chengdu has the Panda Base + walkable pace. Younger children may prefer Chengdu's calmer streets.
- For budget travellers
- Chengdu wins. Mid-range daily costs run 30-40% below Shanghai. Sichuan food is cheap by design.
- If you only have a short stay
- 3 days Shanghai (Bund + Yu Garden + French Concession + Xintiandi) OR 4 days Chengdu (Panda Base + Kuanzhai + Sichuan Opera + Leshan Giant Buddha day + Mount Qingcheng). No direct trip between; 3-hour HSR via Chongqing or 2h30 direct flight.
