Suzhou vs Hangzhou — Jiangnan classical comparison
Suzhou and Hangzhou are the two classical Jiangnan cities most travellers visit as a side-trip from Shanghai. Both are UNESCO-recognised: Suzhou for its classical gardens (nine of them inscribed) and Hangzhou for the West Lake cultural landscape. High-speed rail from Shanghai is ~30 minutes to Suzhou, ~1 hour to Hangzhou; either fits in a single long day, both fit comfortably in a 3-4 day Jiangnan add-on.

Verdict by trip type
- For a first-time visit
- Suzhou for a shorter first visit — its main draw (a garden or two + old-town canal walk) fits into a half-day. Hangzhou's West Lake really needs a full day plus half.
- For culture and history
- Suzhou for classical Chinese garden design (Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden are canonical Ming/Qing work). Hangzhou for imperial-era poetic landscape (West Lake is the archetype every other lake in China gets compared to) and tea culture (Longjing).
- For food
- Hangzhou is the food destination — the birthplace of Hangzhou cuisine (Beggar's Chicken, West Lake vinegar fish, dongpo pork), plus Longjing tea. Suzhou has its own specialities (song shu gui yu 'squirrel fish', biluochun tea) but a narrower range.
- For nightlife
- Both are quiet after 22:00. Hangzhou's north side of West Lake has more bars. Neither is a nightlife destination.
- For families with children
- Hangzhou. West Lake is stroller-friendly, boat rides are gentle, the surrounding parks are safe and open. Suzhou gardens involve narrow paths and steps.
- For budget travellers
- Suzhou is slightly cheaper. Both are pricier than average small Chinese cities because they're on the tourist trail from Shanghai.
- If you only have a short stay
- 1 day Suzhou (Humble Administrator's Garden + Pingjiang Road canal + Tiger Hill) OR 2 days Hangzhou (West Lake circuit + Longjing tea village + Lingyin Temple). Combine both in 3 days from Shanghai for a classic Jiangnan add-on.
