For a first-time visit

Chengdu. Slower tempo, easier to navigate on foot, home base for the Panda Base and the Sichuan cuisine you probably came for. Chongqing is more impressive to photograph (the vertical geography is genuinely unique) but harder to enjoy as a first-visit base.

For culture and history

Roughly equal — both are Sichuan cultural cores. Chengdu leans classical (Wenshu Monastery, Kuanzhai Alley, Sichuan Opera face-changing shows). Chongqing leans modern-industrial (Ciqikou old town + wartime capital history from 1937-45).

For food

Both excellent, both spicy, subtly different. Chengdu hotpot is the mala (numbing-spicy) prototype. Chongqing hotpot is even oilier and hotter, with the famous jiugongge (nine-grid) pot to keep milder items separate. Street food snacks (chuan chuan, cold noodles, mapo tofu, dan dan noodles) are cheaper and more plentiful in Chengdu.

For nightlife

Chongqing. Hongya Cave lit up at night is one of the most photographed skylines in China. The riverside bars and the Nanshan hill viewpoints are properly night-focused. Chengdu's nightlife is centred on Jiuyanqiao and Taikoo Li — good but less dramatic.

For families with children

Chengdu. Panda Base (kids under 10 love it) plus flat, walkable centre. Chongqing's escalators, monorail-through-buildings, and cliffside walkways are fun but the terrain is genuinely tiring with pushchairs.

For budget travellers

Roughly equivalent. Chongqing is slightly cheaper for accommodation; Chengdu slightly cheaper for food. Neither is a budget-buster.

3 days Chengdu (Panda Base + Kuanzhai + Sichuan Opera + Leshan day trip) OR 2 days Chongqing (Hongya + Ciqikou + Yangtze cruise start). If you have 5 days, do Chengdu (3) + Chongqing (2) — high-speed rail between is ~1h.
