Overview
Qing imperial summer mountain resort 230 km northeast of Beijing. UNESCO-listed Mountain Resort and Eight Outer Temples — the Qing emperors' summer retreat from 1703 to 1820.
Chengde (formerly Jehol) was the Qing imperial summer retreat from 1703 to 1820. Emperors from Kangxi onward moved the full court here annually to escape Beijing's summer heat and to conduct frontier diplomacy — Mongolian, Tibetan and Central Asian vassals were received here rather than in Beijing, which gave the court a degree of political flexibility. The Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang) covers 5.6 km² of imperial parkland within its enclosing wall: lakes, gardens, plains and forested hills, larger than the Forbidden City and Summer Palace combined.
The Eight Outer Temples (Wai Ba Miao), built between 1713 and 1780 in styles representing Tibetan Buddhist, Mongolian Buddhist, and Han Buddhist architectural traditions, surround the Mountain Resort on the northern and eastern hillsides. They reflect the Qing emperor's deliberate positioning as patron of all Buddhist traditions across the empire — a political as much as a religious statement. Putuo Zongcheng Temple (1771 CE), modelled on the Lhasa Potala Palace at roughly one-third scale, is the most substantial. Puning Temple houses a 22-metre wooden Guanyin figure.
UNESCO-listed in 1994 as the Mountain Resort and Outlying Temples of Chengde, the site is under-visited relative to its scale and historical significance — it receives a fraction of the visitors of the Ming Tombs or Summer Palace, both in comparable categories. The 90-minute HSR journey from Beijing makes it a day trip, though an overnight stay allows the early-morning Mountain Resort to be explored without crowds.
