Overview
Seaside resort town on the Bohai coast of Hebei, the traditional summer retreat for Beijing officials since the 1890s. Sandy beaches, birdwatching at the Nandaihe wetlands, and a position between the sea and Shanhaiguan's Ming Great Wall section.
Beidaihe is a coastal district of Qinhuangdao city on the Bohai Sea, roughly 280 km east of Beijing. Its identity as a Chinese seaside resort was established during the late Qing dynasty when foreign diplomats, missionaries and railway workers — construction of the Beijing-Shenyang line passed nearby — built summer villas along the shore. By the Republic era, Beidaihe had become a popular retreat for foreign residents of Beijing. After 1949 the Communist Party leadership adopted Beidaihe as its summer working location, a tradition that continued for decades and embedded the town's name in political shorthand.
The beaches along the Beidaihe seafront — Zhonghaitan and East Beach in particular — are among the best sandy beaches accessible from Beijing by rail, which explains the town's enduring popularity despite the Bohai Sea not being particularly clear. Summer (July–August) brings heavy crowds from Beijing and Tianjin; outside summer, the town is remarkably quiet.
The Nandaihe area west of Beidaihe includes a bird observatory that is one of China's most productive coastal birdwatching sites. Positioned on an East Asian-Australasian Flyway route, the Beidaihe-Nandaihe coastal stretch sees exceptional shorebird and raptor migration in spring (late April–May) and autumn (August–October), drawing birders from across China and internationally.
Shanhaiguan, 30 km east and administratively also part of Qinhuangdao, is the eastern terminus of the Ming Great Wall — the First Pass Under Heaven (Tian Xia Di Yi Guan) and the point where the Wall meets the sea at Laolongtou. The combination of Beidaihe beaches and Shanhaiguan history makes a logical 2–3 day trip from Beijing.
What to see

- Nandaihe bird observatory — spring and autumn migration hotspot for shorebirds and raptors
- Shanhaiguan (30 km east) — Ming Great Wall eastern terminus and First Pass Under Heaven
- Laolongtou (Old Dragon's Head) — where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea
- Beidaihe seaside promenade and former villa district
- Pigeon's Nest (Geziwo) Park — sunrise viewpoint above the beach
- Former foreign villa and church buildings — traces of the early resort era
What to eat

- Hebei-style braised pork with noodles (zhájiàngmiàn variant)
- Bohai shrimp paste — a preserved seafood condiment used throughout Hebei coastal cooking
- Grilled corn on the cob — a beach snack available throughout summer
- Fresh scallops grilled with garlic on the beachside barbecue stalls
- Mantis shrimp (pí xiā) — a Bohai coast speciality in summer
Getting there
No commercial airport at Beidaihe. Nearest airport is Qinhuangdao (QHD) — limited services; most visitors fly to Beijing and use rail. By high-speed rail: from Beijing South to Beidaihe station approximately 90 minutes [VERIFY: current schedule and fares — May 2026]. Standard rail from Beijing: approximately 3–4 hours. The station is about 10 km from the beach area — taxi or local bus to the seafront.
Getting around
Taxis, electric vehicles and local buses between Beidaihe beach, Nandaihe and Shanhaiguan. Bicycles for hire along the seafront. The beach areas are walkable.
Where to stay
Hotels and guesthouses along the seafront and in the resort district. Summer prices are significantly higher than the rest of the year. The Shanhaiguan area has its own guesthouses for visitors combining the Great Wall and the beach.
We list neighbourhoods, not specific hotels — we don't endorse hotels.
When to go
July–August for beach swimming (water temperature 22–26°C, though the sea can be rough). Late April–May is excellent for birdwatching at Nandaihe with virtually no tourist crowds. September–October for Great Wall visits — comfortable temperatures and autumn light. Outside summer the town is essentially empty.
