About
Restored Yuan-era water town 50 km southeast of Suzhou. The most-photographed of the classical Yangtze water towns.
Zhouzhuang is the water town that started eastern China's water-town tourism industry. The settlement dates to around 1086, when a landowner named Zhou Di donated his estate to a Buddhist temple — giving the town its name. It prospered as a commercial hub during the Ming and Qing periods, and the canal-side merchant residences and stone bridges that survive from those centuries are what the tourism infrastructure is built around. Zhouzhuang opened to visitors in the early 1980s and has been continuously, intensively marketed since; it is both the longest-running and the most crowded of the classical water towns.
The old town occupies about 0.5 square kilometres between the Baixian Lake to the north and the Nanhu Lake to the south. Fourteen stone bridges cross the canals, of which the most photographed is the Double Bridge — two aligned stone arches (one square, one round) that have appeared on Chinese currency and in numerous paintings. The Zhang Residence (1449) and the Shen Hall (1742) are the two principal historic residences open to visitors. Both are large merchant-class compounds with successive courtyards, carved woodwork, and period furniture. Boat rides through the main canal channel are the standard tourist activity — gondola-style wooden craft operated by boatwomen in regional dress.
The commercialisation is pervasive: souvenir shops, snack vendors, and tourist eateries line nearly every lane accessible during daytime hours. The through-ticket system bundles the main sites. Visiting before 8:30am or after 5pm — the ticket allows evening re-entry on the same day — significantly reduces the crowd problem. Zhouzhuang is approximately 50 kilometres from both Shanghai and Suzhou, accessible by tour bus from either city. For visitors who have specific time constraints and want the archetypal water town image, it delivers; for those who prioritise atmosphere over accessibility, Tongli or Xitang offer a quieter equivalent.
