Overview
A coastal city in Liaoning with the Red Beach — one of the largest Suaeda salsa wetland ecosystems in the world, which turns vivid red in autumn — and significant rice and crab agriculture.
Panjin is a prefecture-level city on the Liaodong Bay coast of Liaoning province, at the mouth of the Liao River. The city sits within an extraordinary wetland environment: the Liaohe River Delta, one of the best-preserved estuarine wetland systems in northeast China. The delta and its surrounding marshes hold the Red Beach (Hong Haitai) — a vast tidal flat covered in Suaeda salsa, a succulent plant that grows red in autumn. The phenomenon is seasonal: the Suaeda turns from green to vivid scarlet-red in September and October, creating a landscape that is genuinely spectacular from above or from the walkways that cross the wetland.
The Red Beach wetlands are also a critical habitat for the red-crowned crane and other migratory birds. The area sits on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway and hundreds of bird species use the delta during seasonal migrations. Birdwatching, particularly in spring and autumn, draws specialist visitors. The crane habitat in the protected zones has contributed to internationally recognised conservation work.
Panjin is also known for its agricultural produce: the rice grown in the Liao River Delta's paddy fields is marketed as 'Pan River rice' and commands a premium in Chinese markets, and the local hairy crab (a variant of the Shanghai mitten crab) is a seasonal delicacy from September to November.
Shenyang, the Liaoning provincial capital, is approximately 150 km northeast and is the practical gateway for most visitors. Panjin's own airport handles limited routes.
Cultural & access notes
The Red Beach has become a major domestic tourist destination since social media coverage in the early 2020s. Peak weekend visits in October can be very crowded on the main boardwalk — visiting on weekdays gives a quieter experience. The wetland's ecological sensitivity means the scenic area is managed with access restrictions.
What to see

- Liao River Estuary coast — the where the river meets Liaodong Bay
- Panjin International Wetland Museum — exhibits on the delta ecosystem
What to eat

- Pan River rice — the local premium short-grain rice, served with seasonal dishes
- River prawn and shrimp dishes — fresh from the estuarine waters
- Liaoning-style braised pork with pickled cabbage (suan cai pork)

Getting there
From Shenyang by high-speed rail approximately 40 minutes; from Dalian approximately 1.5 hours [VERIFY: current schedules — May 2026]. Panjin Airport (PJX) has limited flights from Beijing and some seasonal routes [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The Red Beach scenic area is 30 km south of Panjin city centre by taxi or tourist bus.
Getting around
Tourist buses run between Panjin city and the Red Beach scenic area. Taxis cover the route. Within the scenic area, the elevated boardwalk system provides access on foot.
Where to stay
Panjin city has standard Chinese hotels. For the Red Beach experience, the nearby Dawa county town has simpler accommodation closer to the wetland.
We list neighbourhoods, not specific hotels — we don't endorse hotels.
When to go
September–October is the essential period for the Red Beach colour — the Suaeda peaks in colour in late September and early October. Outside this window the wetland is green or bare; worth visiting for birdwatching but without the signature visual effect. Spring migration (April–May) is the best birdwatching window.
