How to think about international schools in China
For expatriate families, the school decision often drives the city and district decision, not the other way around. A family committed to the IB Diploma Programme will look for IB schools; a British family wanting A-levels will look for British-curriculum schools; a family following a peripatetic career may prefer a consistent curriculum across postings.
China's international schools are restricted by regulation to enrolling children holding foreign passports — Chinese nationals cannot enroll at licensed international schools as a rule (bilingual schools operate differently; see the bilingual vs international comparison guide). This also means that if your child is a Chinese citizen through one parent, they may face restrictions depending on how dual citizenship is handled in your specific case — take specialist advice before assuming a particular school will accept your child.
